Before You Hire a Contractor
What To Consider
- Ask if the contractor is registered with the Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor Law, as well as the contractor registration number and license number. Get proof of all. Our numbers include: Masonry License – #102049
MA Reg. – #112637
CT Reg. – # 0621729
- Does the contractor require a substantial deposit? This could signal credit unworthiness. The contractor could be less inclined to start work on time or not show up at all. Ask what the deposit is for. If the contractor says, "I need it for supplies," you could then say, "Don't you have credit with your suppliers?" His/her answer should be "YES." You say, "Great, then get your supplies on credit, and I'll pay in full when the job is completed."
- Always obtain a Certificate of Workman's Compensation and Liability Insurance before work is initiated.
- Ask for a minimum of three references.
- Ask what qualifications and experience the contractor has in this field.
- Call the Better Business Bureau for any complaints and ask if your contractor is a member.
- Avoid hiring anyone solely upon lowest estimate. Consider all other listed qualifications.
